An animal can only be happy and devoted to its owner if it does not experience pain while moving.
We have been performing joint replacement operations at the Siaurio Šnauceris veterinary clinics since 2016. We were the first and only ones in Lithuania to start offering this service, which makes us the veterinary specialists with the most experience in this field.
Chronic joint disease – when your dog begins to feel pain and limp, or has a hard time getting up after lying down for a while – is a signal that it is time to talk to an orthopaedic veterinary surgeon.
A physical exam – as well as an X-ray if necessary – make it possible to detect osteoarthritis in time, i.e. chronic diseases affecting the articular surfaces, traumas or congenital pathologies of the dog’s hip joints, such as dysplasia, which cause pain and discomfort to the animal.
With timely treatment, surgery can often be avoided, and in some cases it is enough to just remove the femoral head. This is especially true for small breed dogs. The muscles compensate for the function of the femural head, and the dog can live without pain, since the source of pain – the joint – is no longer there. In more serious cases, when the dog is large and weighs 20-30 kg or more, hip and knee joint operations are prevalent in veterinary practice.
Knee or hip replacement surgery is performed when medicinal/conservative treatment no longer produces results that can ensure full, comfortable and pain-free movement for your pet.
The most common reasons for choosing this complex surgical procedure are:
Only the highest quality endoprostheses are used. These artificial joints are made from a special mixture of metal and plastic that stands out for its low rejection rate. During a total joint replacement/arthroplasty, the damaged part of the joint is replaced with an artificial joint component that is adhered to the bone with bone cement.
The knee joint needs to be isolated – it has a meniscus and a ligament system. It is a composite joint, and is very often where severe traumas occur. In global practice, and in Lithuania, this is no longer a problem – everything is solved nicely and quickly by replacing the joint with a new, light titanium product, which fully performs the function of the real joint and lasts for the rest of the animal’s life.
In the X-rays below, you can see how an artificial knee joint looks in a dog.
Joint replacement surgery is often the only way for an animal with chronic degenerative joint disease to move and enjoy life without the constraints of pain.
Knee joint replacement EUR 700-800
Hip joint replacement EUR 1,500
